Connecting the Lines

Heeseop Yoon

About the exhibition

Yoon is known for her large-scale line drawing installations and intricate black and white drawings. Yoon’s work is about memory and perception within cluttered spaces, places where everything is jumbled and time becomes ambiguous without the presence of people. As Yoon explains, “I construct a view and then I draw freehand without erasing. As I correct ‘mistakes’ the work results in double or multiple lines, which reflect how my perception has changed over time and makes me question my initial perception.”

Connecting the Lines is a site-specific drawing installation made with ¼’’ black masking tape and Mylar. “In my drawing I am interested in depicting the subject of clutter in the interior spaces such as storage spaces, junkyard and thrift stores, the places where everything is jumbled, stacked, disorganized and filled with the random debris of our life. I search for these kinds of spaces wherever I travel and photograph the spaces to use as resources of my drawings. The drawings in Connecting the Lines depict the piles of defunct everyday objects from multiple locations across the world including my parents’ basement in Korea, woodshop at the City Collage of NY, thrift store in Main and junkshop in Germany. By representing these claustrophobic environments and defunct objects from the different parts of the world I am interested in recording things from the lost spaces to create the opportunity to direct the viewer’s active gaze and discovering experience in the space. The installation encourages the viewer to consider memory, perception, and also to explore the space with different perception.”

Heeseop Yoon was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. She holds her BFA from Chung-ang University, Seoul, Korea and an MFA from City College of New York. She has had solo and two-person shows at Triple Candie, March Gallery, and Bose Pacia, all in NYC; Arario Gallery, Seoul; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ.

Other exhibitions include MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin; The Bronx Museum, NY; Seoul Arts Center, Korea; China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Australia and Media Art Center, Beijing, and has participated in several residencies such as the Lower East Side Printshop, Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation; Skowhegan School of Painting, and Artist Alliance Inc., all NY, and Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen Germany. She recently finished her first public mural installation in Italian Market in Philadelphia. Yoon currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
