About the exhibition

Rooted in observation, Glovinski’s mixed media practice investigates objects, patterns, and organizing systems found in daily life.

This exhibition brings together work on paper, small object sculpture and painting, and focuses on landscapes, textiles, and reference books as its main subject matter. In works like the Time Life Nature Series and Pawtuckaway, Glovinski breaks with conventional approaches to landscape painting – instead of painting plein air vistas, she locates landscape “once removed” (i.e, the topography and design of trail maps, and landscape images printed on book covers) and re-creates these objects to mimic the original.

Glovinski’s drawings of textiles, inspired by rag rugs and beach chair seat webbing, show a reverence to repetitive mark making, where the act of drawing explores textile weaving and sewing without the traditional means of loom and thread.

Other works on paper such as The Book of Popular Science, give a nostalgic nod analog reference books. Drawing them in ordered stacks allows the viewer to see them also as pure pattern.

Glovinski believes that there is wonder to be found in the everyday, if only we just slightly shift our view, keep our eyes open, and are willing to see the connection between things. By mimicking these objects, the artist’s aim is not trickery, but rather to slow down the experience of seeing, creating deeper awareness and bending our perceptions of what can be considered worthy of our attention.

Glovinski received her BFA from Boston University and has exhibited at deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park (Lincoln, MA), Center for Maine Contemporary Art (Rockland, ME), Boston Center for the Arts (Boston, MA), Portland Museum of Art (Portland, ME), Museum of Contemporary Art (Jacksonville, FL), Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (Salt Lake City, UT), and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey.  She has been awarded residencies at the Studios at MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA), Teton ArtLab (Jackson, WY), and the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT). In 2016, she was the recipient of the Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and an Artist’s Resource Trust (A.R.T.) grant from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. This is the first of three solo exhibitions in 2018 including Morgan Lehman Gallery (New York, NY) and Colby Museum of Art (Waterville, ME).  She currently lives in Dover and works in Rollinsford, New Hampshire.
